The BMW Championship is the penultimate tournament of the 2020-21 season and the final tournament before the PGA Tour Championship. This will be the first time Tour pros will play Caves Valley Golf Club in Owning Mills, MA., and the first tournament in the Baltimore area since 1962.

Jon Rahm is the defending BMW champion after an epic playoff victory over Dustin Johnson at Olympia Fields Country Club outside of Chicago.

This will be the final opportunity for players to get inside the top-30 in the FedEx Cup standings. The tournament winner gets 2,000 FedEx Cup points and $1.71 million of a $9.5 million purse.

The tournament is a 70-man field, minus Patrick Reed, who had to withdraw due to hospitalization for double pneumonia. There is no cut for the event, much like a WGC tournament.

Caves Valley Golf Club is a par-72 track that stretches 7,542 yards. The course opened in 1991 and was designed by Tom Fazio. The course went through some changes over the last 18 months that included lengthening the course, adding and revamping bunkers, and switching the front and back nines.

A prolific ball-striker, Corey Conners is due for his second PGA Tour victory. The Candian ranks high in Strokes Gained: Off-the-Tee, SG: Approach the Green, and SG: Tee-to-Green. If Conners can get the putter going this week, he has a great shot to capture his second career PGA victory.

Detroit Lions (+6) at Pittsburgh Steelers

But they are going to continue to keep Ben Roethlisberger safe on the sidelines, while the Detroit Lions are going to keep working on growing the chemistry between Jared Goff and his new collection of wide receivers.

Six points is just too big of a spread for a game that will mostly be played with backups. You may not get to do this all season, so this week, take the Lions.

Kansas City Chiefs at Arizona Cardinals (+2.5)

Neither starting quarterback saw significant Week 1 action, and neither one will this Friday either. But the Arizona Cardinals have more to play for. The Kansas City Chiefs are working on some depth and getting their O-line up to speed. The Cardinals are trying to push their offense to the next level.

Kansas City puts this game into cruise control first, and that’s why we like the Cardinals.

Tennessee Titans (+3) at Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Last week, the Tennessee Titans were getting 2.5 points against the Atlanta Falcons. They won by 20, holding Atlanta to just three points. Be a believer in this Titans team. They have a good deep offense, and because defensive improvement is such an important thing for them, they are taking the preseason seriously.

You won’t see much of Tom Brady after he finished Week 1 with just nine yards passing. And with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers having 22 incumbent starters returning in 2021, their backups will play a much greater role than Tennessee’s. For that reason, we like the Titans to cover.

It’s a relatively easy course, and the winner of the event this weekend should shoot better than 20-below par, with only two par-fives that are easily reachable. But who exactly does this kind of course favor?

Hideki Matsuyama is second, coming off his showing at the Tokyo Olympics. He missed out on a medal in his home country but was in the seven-player playoff for the bronze medal. His good play in Tokyo combined with his good season on Tour makes him an interesting play this weekend.

Underdogs and Darkhorses

Russell Henley is paying +3500, almost three times what you get for a bet on Simpson. But with a top-20 finish at the U.S. Open, the Travelers, and the John Deere, he’s played very well this summer. Ignore his struggles at The British Open. Henley is a much better putter on the Bermuda grass of Greensboro, and he will be in the mix when the weekend rolls around.

Si-Woo Kim is paying even better at +4000, and he has a win on this course, coming in 2016. He has struggled since The Memorial, which is why he is paying so well here. Keep an eye on Jhonattan Vegas at +5000. With the biggest names on Tour over in Japan, he has had quite the run, with four top-20 finishes in five starts and a pair of runner-ups. With most of the big names still missing and Vegas with a top-10 finish here at Sedgefield, give him a look this weekend. He has the game to match this course.

They actually played against each other once in the 2018 SEC Championship Game. But that was before Fields was a starting quarterback and at Ohio State. We may not see them in the lineup at the same time, but it’s still worth a watch.

Trevor Lawrence and the Jacksonville Jaguars hosting the Cleveland Browns will be interesting. Don’t tell the fans in Florida that it doesn’t matter in the standings. And if Lawrence completes a pass to Tim Tebow, Jacksonville might collectively pass out.

We won’t see much of Patrick Mahomes in San Francisco, but the real interest is how much of Trey Lance will we see as compared to Jimmy Garoppolo and what that might mean for the regular season.

It’s the same scenario with the New England Patriots. Cam Newton appears to still be the starter, but if Mac Jones looks good against that Washington defense, how quickly will that change?

Hall of Fame Game Betting Preview: Dallas Cowboys at Pittsburgh Steelers

There was plenty of football news over the last half-year, but people are actually going to hit each other on Thursday night, and that is very exciting. It’s also a glimpse into a possibly normal season this year (fingers crossed) as all of the preseason, including the Hall of Fame Game, was canceled in 2020.

Our six long months of having no football is over.

Pittsburgh Steelers (-1.5) vs. Dallas Cowboys

It’s one of the most classic matchups in the NFL, making it extra fitting for the Hall of Fame Game in Canton, Ohio, where 19 Cowboys and 24 Steelers are currently enshrined. Each team will be adding a player to the tally when the 2021 class is enshrined on Sunday. Wide receiver Drew Pearson is in for the Dallas Cowboys, and guard Alan Faneca goes in for Pittsburgh.

As for the game on the field, the much-anticipated return of Dak Prescott will have to wait. He’s had a shoulder setback in training camp, and he will not play on Thursday. That means that Garrett Gilbert will likely start, and he’s backed up by Ben DiNucci and Cooper Rush. We also aren’t going to see Amari Cooper on a football field for at least two more weeks.

The biggest task for the Pittsburgh Steelers is figuring out their offensive line. Ben Roethlisberger won’t play, but Pittsburgh is probably going to ride with their first-string offensive line for a number of series. With so many new faces on the line, they need to develop chemistry.

Gone are offensive line mainstays David DeCastro, Ramon Foster, Maurkice Pouncey, Marcus Gilbert, and Alejandro Villanueva. In are Trae Turner, Chukwuma Okorafor, Kendrick Green, Kevin Dotson, and Zach Banner.
