Rocket Mortgage Classic Betting Preview

It is time for the Rocket Mortgage Classic at the Detroit Golf Club. Read on to find out which golfer will come out on top!

We still have a couple of more weeks of the PGA Tour playing stateside before everyone heads across the Atlantic for the Scottish Open and then The Open Championship. The final major of the year is being held in Liverpool, England.

For now, we are in the land of Motown, before we head to the home of the Beatles. It is the Rocket Mortgage Classic at the Detroit Golf Club, a course that has been around since 1899, but it is a newbie on the circuit. It was introduced to the PGA Tour just four years ago when Nate Lashley went -25 to win.

It’s not a packed field of great golfers, but 14 of the top 40 golfers in the world are going to be at Rocket Mortgage Classic on Thursday. The highest-ranked of those 14 is Max Homa, coming in at No. 9 overall. He missed the cut at the U.S. Open and Travelers but was T9 at the Charles Schwab and T8 at the Wells Fargo.

Tony Finau is the 14th-ranked player in the world and the defending champion at Rocket Mortgage Classic. It is that fact that has him as the modest favorite to repeat, something that hasn’t been done in the short history here. Since winning the Mexico Open in April, it’s been a tough stretch for Finau, going T23, T72, CUT, T32, and T45.

Also high on the favorites board is Rickie Fowler, who has been red hot since May. He was T6 at the Charles Schwab, T9 at the Memorial, T5 at the U.S. Open, and T13 at the Travelers. And even before missing the cut at the PGA Championship prior to this stretch, he has five other top-15 finishes going back to the Phoenix Open.

Considering recent play, it’s a bit surprising that Finau is paying shorter odds than Fowler, who has made three cuts in four tournaments at the Detroit Golf Club.

Another golfer to keep an eye on is Harris English, at the end of the top 10 favorites. He missed much of 2022 with a torn labrum, but prior to that, he was a top-10 player in the World Golf Rankings, and he was a 2021 Ryder Cup choice.

He’s on the comeback from last year’s surgery, finishing T3 at the Wells Fargo, T12 at the Charles Schwab, and T8 at the U.S. Open.

U.S. Open 2023 Betting Preview

It is time for the U.S. Open 2023!

After the last two weeks, golf needs to catch its collective breath. We’ve had the “merger” between the PGA and LIV, although PGA commissioner Jay Monahan insists that it is not a merger. It just looks and acts like one.

Then Nick Taylor just dropped a 72-foot eagle putt in a playoff at the Canadian Open to become the first home-country hero to win that event in 69 years.

But there is no time to rest and no time to breathe, as it is U.S. Open week, with the venerable Los Angeles Country Club hosting its first professional golf tournament since the 1940 Los Angeles Open.

Scottie Scheffler, with 16 straight finishes of T12 or better, is the favorite. He was last year’s Masters winner and the runner-up at the U.S. Open. This year has a win at THE PLAYERS Championship and a runner-up at the PGA Championship. Scheffler also has experience at Los Angeles Country Club, helping to lead the U.S. Walker Cup team to victory in 2017.

The up-and-downness of Jon Rahm may make many bettors shy away from his small +1000 payout. He did win the Masters in April, but he finished T50 at the PGA Championship last month. However, he did win the U.S. Open two years ago, to go along with a T3 in 2019 and a T12 in 2022.

Is there a golfer who has a better month than Brooks Koepka? He won the PGA Championship, his fifth career major title, and then his move to LIV golf was justified by the PGA Tour last week. Now he can have his money, get back into the good graces of the PGA, and perhaps win his third career U.S. Open.

Of course, Rory McIlroy is one of the favorites to win the U.S. Open. He’s one of the favorites at every major every year. But it’s worth remembering that his last actual win at a major was in 2014. At age 25, he had four major wins. Now, at age 34, he’s still at four. He’s gone 32 straight major starts without a win, although he did have three top-five finishes in 2022.

Home cooking may be a factor for both Patrick Cantlay and Max Homa. Cantlay is from Long Beach and played his college golf at UCLA, just two miles away from LACC. And Homa, while playing his college golf at Cal, shot a 61 at LACC during the 2013 Pac-12 Championship.

Arnold Palmer Invitational Betting Preview

A lot of the heavy hitters on the PGA Tour took last week off because they were preparing to hit the course this week at the Arnold Palmer Invitational.

Jon Rahm is back in the field, which of course, makes him the favorite. But Rahm is just one of 44 of the OWGR Top-50 that will be playing this week, as well as all 14 winners this season.

And for the first time in 2023, weather will play an important role in Arnold Palmer. Forecasters are calling for high winds all four days, with some gusts as high as 40mph.

Rahm already has three wins this season, including the last time he played two weeks ago. His run right now is Tiger-esque, and there is no safer bet in sports than on Rahm to be in the mix for a title at Arnold Palmer. He wasn’t great on this course last year, but that doesn’t matter when looking at this year’s odds. He is the best golfer on the planet.

Scottie Scheffler has a win at the Phoenix Open and three other top-10s this year. He was also the winner at Bay Hill last year. Rory McIlroy was the winner here in 2018, and he’s been in the top-15 in seven of his eight career starts here.

After those big three, there is a bit of a drop down to the next group of contenders, led by Max Homa. He has two wins this season, including the Farmers Insurance Open a month ago. He was also the runner-up two weeks ago at Riviera. He was top-10 on this course in 2021.

Viktor Hovland was the runner-up on this course a year ago, and Will Zalatoris has a top-10 finish in two career starts at the Arnold Palmer.

Best Value Bets

With so many great golfers in the field it’s harder to find a longshot who might rise to the top of the leaderboard. But one possibility this weekend is Keith Mitchell at +4000. He has a T6 and T5 at the Arnold Palmer. He’s also coming off a fifth-place finish two weeks ago at Riviera.

Sam Burns is also paying +4000, and this year he has a T11 at the American Express and a T6 at the Phoenix Open. He was T9 at this event a year ago in spite of shooting a 75 in the third round. Clear that up, and he could be a contender.

BMW Championship 2022 Betting Preview

The FedEx Cup Playoffs head to the second event of three, as the PGA’s best move to Delaware for the BMW Championship at the South Course at Wilmington Country Club.

Never again do we have to refer to Will Zalatoris as the golfer most likely to get his first win. He finally finished atop the leaderboard on Sunday, and now Zalatoris can go about the business of trying to win the Cup.

Of course, the entirety of the Tour’s top players are here, and the BMW Championship will feel as close to a Major as you can get.

Rory McIlroy was not great last week in Memphis, and he failed to make the cut. But this is still Rory McIlroy, and the course in Wilmington matches his strengths perfectly. He is the BMW Championship favorite, and his status is deserved.

Jon Rahn has been fairly absent for the last couple of weeks, but in the opening round of the FedEx Cup Playoffs, he led the field in greens in regulation, and he finished on Sunday with a T5.

Will Zalatoris was clear after his win last week that it’s great to have the monkey off his back, but that one win has not satisfied his hunger. Part of that hunger is fueled by just how close he has come in the major championships this season. The other part is how close he is now to winning the end-of-season prize.

And don’t sleep on Matt Fitzpatrick even though he’s only eighth on the favorites board. The U.S. Open champion was consistently good at the St. Jude last week, going 68-66-67-68.

Others to Consider at the BMW Championship

He’s no longshot, paying +2500, but Sungjae Im does present some good value when you consider that he was a runner-up twice in the last month, and last week he was 12th.

Max Homa is paying +4500, and he’s largely an afterthought this week. But he won the Wells Fargo in May and was T5 at the Memorial in June. He also got off to a great start last week in Memphis – a first round 66 – before he faded at the end.

A true BMW Championship longshot is Keegan Bradley at +7500. But when it comes to similar courses to Wilmington, he’s played well this year. That includes a T7 at the U.S. Open and a T2 at the Wells Fargo.

Rocket Mortgage Classic 2022 Betting Preview

After most of the big names of the PGA Tour took last week off to recover from their trip to Scotland, many of them are back on the course this week for the Rocket Mortgage Classic at the Detroit Golf Club.

Last week at the TPC Twin Cities, Tony Finau became just the third betting favorite to win a tournament this year, and he did it with a great comeback in the final round. He trailed by five strokes after 54 holes but ended up winning by four strokes after 72 holes.

Patrick Cantlay sits as the pre-tournament favorite, paying +1000. Since missing the cut at the PGA, he has been on a tear, even if it’s come without a win. He was T3 at the Memorial, T14 at the U.S. Open, T4 at the Scottish Open, and T8 at The Open Championship two weeks ago.

The aforementioned Tony Finau, coming off last week’s win, has a game made for the Detroit Golf Club. He did struggle here in 2020, but his driving accuracy should have him shooting one of the lower numbers for the weekend. To go along with last week’s win, he had a second-place finish at the Canadian Open in June.

And it seems like every week we say that this can be the tournament where Will Zalatoris finally gets his win. Well, wash, rinse, repeat. He has eight top-10s in 2022, he has three runner-ups at major championships, and he’s now ranked 13th in the world. Surely that elusive first win is just around the corner.

Top Value Plays for Rocket Mortgage Classic

One of the several players at +4000 is Davis Riley, who missed the cut last week in Minnesota but should be in the mix in Michigan. He was fifth at the Mexico Open, T9 at the Byron Nelson, and T4 at the Charles Schwab.

Cameron Champ, at +6000, broke his missed cuts streak with a T16 in Minnesota. He also had a T6 at the Mexico Open and T10 at a little event called the Masters. He’s big off the tee and is a good fit for the course in Detroit, as evidenced by his 12th place finish and final round 66 in 2020.

After a cancellation a year ago, the Wells Fargo Championship is back. And while last weekend’s field at the Valspar Championship was a little light on big names, this week at Quail Hollow in Charlotte, 10 of the top 15 golfers in the world will be teeing it up for the $8.1 million purse.

With just two tuneups left before the PGA Championship in South Carolina, the golfing world has descended upon North Carolina to get itself ready.

Justin Thomas was the betting favorite last week and he ended up tied for 13th. He’s the favorite once again, and now in an even better field, and his +800 number doesn’t justify the risk of placing a bet.

Rory McIlroy is the course record holder here with his -21 back in 2015. At +1800 he’s among the favorites, but still provides solid betting value. This is also where he won his first ever PGA Tour event back in 2010, and despite his recent struggles, he is a different golfer on this course.

It’s hard not to be a fan of Will Zalatoris after his incredible run at Augusta, and no doubt he is playing well. But if you are looking to bet on Zalatoris at +2800, you really should put that money toward Patrick Reed or Patrick Cantlay, also at +2800. Reed is the seventh ranked golfer in the world and Cantlay is ranked 11th, and both are much better bets to win in a solid field like this.

Wells Fargo – Best Value Underdogs

If you’re looking to bet someone outside the top 10, think about Max Homa and his +3400 payout. He won at this tournament the last time it was played (2019) and was incredible on the greens. He’s also playing well currently, with six top-25 finishes in his last eight tournaments, a win at the Genesis Invitational, and sixth place finish last week at Valspar.

Also, give Keegan Bradley a look. He’s coming off a second place finish at Valspar and two tournaments ago at the Zurich Classic he tied for fourth. And better yet, he’s completely under the radar this week and paying +5000.
